The route from Ranco to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina is mainly off-road and hugs the lakeside for about 15 km (9.3 miles) as you ride through the spectacularly beautiful countryside. The only stretch of any difficulty is a climb of about 500 m with a 12% gradient as we near the monastery.
A visit to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina is a must: the building dates back to the 12th century and is a majestic sight to behold as it seems to cling to a sheer rock face overhanging the lake, which is about 320 m deep at that point.
Our route then takes us towards the wetlands at Monvalle, which we get to after a short climb. After the climb, the road descends and remains flat all the way back to the hotel.
