Piancavallo

We set out from Ranco on the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore, and cross the bridge over the River Ticino at Sesto Calende after 10 km (6.2 miles) and ride into Piedmont. From here the road is almost completely flat and takes us through some of the best-known lakeside towns, such as Arona, Stresa, Verbania and Cannero, which is famous for its castles.
Once we get to Cannero the road starts to climb up towards Piancavallo, following the route of a major stage from the Giro d’Italia 2015. The distance and elevation are comparable to the climb from Bormio to Stelvio: 20 km (12.4 miles) over an elevation of 1,500 m. The descent is really enjoyable as the countryside offers breathtaking vistas.
